Chris Holder Residency for 5th Grade
The fifth grade students at Charlton Heights will be studying the Civil Rights Movement through an interdisciplinary partnership with Chris Holder, fifth grade staff, and special area teachers including art, music, phys. ed. and library. The students will be exposed to songs, poems, stories, and dances which will enhance the study of The Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's. Chris Holder will combine songs, novels, artifacts, photographs, and art work in highly interactive sessions. During the residency, Mrs. Kirsty (music) will instruct the children in different songs from the era that will be incorporated into a final assembly. In art class, they will be expressing themselves by creating art work which will be brought together for the culminating project. The students will be learning about differences in the way school was in the 1960s in social studies and physical education classes through direct instruction. In the library media center, students will conduct research on major concepts related to The Civil Rights Movement. All of these areas will be combined into a final presentation for the students, family and staff at Charlton Heights.
This program is funded in part by the Arts-in-Education/Local Capacity Building Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts, administered by the Saratoga Arts.
